It’s no secret we’ve had a long time girl crush on this incredibly inspiring designer – but until now it was mainly based on coveting her jewels, coveting every vintage treasure in her wardrobe, and generally scheming how I could possibly fit the entire backlog of her Heyoka Leather collections into my wardrobe… but watching the Stylelikeu film above gave me a deeper insight into where she’d come from and what she was truly about.

It was so inspiring to hear about her grass-roots entry into the world of fashion, her brave move from LA to a ranch in Austin, Texas, about how she’s worn the same pair of beat-up Levis since she was 17, and the backstory to some of her fave vintage finds. But it was most inspiring, and confronting, to hear her talk about her ethics behind the sourcing the leather she uses in her designs. She explains that her leather bags are made exclusively out of leftover deer hides, instead of deer-tanned cowhides (which are easier to find but often the by-product of larger corporations with unsustainable work ethics.)

You can get so much from seeing images on blogs, and following someone on instagram, and even following a label’s collections each season – but often it’s not until you sit down and really listen to someone’s story do begin to get a real insight into their creative life. And so the girl-crush from a-far grows stronger…
